When Progress Is Not Enough

Rediscovering Meaning, Ethics, and Human Flourishing in a Disrupted World

Can technological and material progress sustain humanity without meaning, ethics, and purpose?

When Progress Is Not Enough book cover

ABOUT THE BOOK

Progress toward what?

When Progress Is Not Enough begins with a paradox: humanity has achieved extraordinary advances in science, medicine, technology, communication and material prosperity, yet increased capability has not automatically resolved questions of meaning, belonging, justice, responsibility or human purpose.

The book is not an argument against progress. It asks what progress is ultimately for, and what moral and spiritual resources are needed when capability alone cannot answer the question of how human beings ought to live.

Drawing on Islamic thought alongside contemporary conversations in psychology, economics, technology and environmental responsibility, Dr. Abdillah Mohamed explores what genuine human flourishing requires in an age of disruption.

THE ARGUMENT

Four dimensions of human flourishing

01

Purpose

What gives human life meaning when achievement, comfort and capability are not enough?

02

Belonging

How can technological connection become genuine community, relationship and mutual responsibility?

03

Justice

What should prosperity mean when wealth, opportunity, risk and economic power are distributed unequally?

04

Responsibility

How should growing technological and environmental power be governed by stewardship and accountability?

“We are becoming increasingly capable of answering ‘What can we do?’—but are we equally prepared to answer ‘What should we do, and why?’”
